ABSTRACT

The beginning of a truly philosophical understanding of the phenomenon of compromise is found in the ancient cultural tradition. Later, the theses put forward by ancient researchers were developed in the works of medieval authors. The political and legal views of scientists of these periods laid the foundations for understanding compromise, which remain relevant to this day. This article contains an attempt to study the most significant ideas of ancient and medieval authors, reflecting the nature of compromise and its purpose in the life of society. The theoretical propositions formulated on the basis of their analysis should become an important addition to the modern concept of compromise. Its formation is one of the stages in the construction of a modern theory of legal compromise.
