The article defines the concept of radiation safety as a scientific and practical activity, and its main tasks. The practical necessity of introduction of the fundamentals of radiation safety and protection in the form of an independent discipline is introduced in the program of vocational training in higher educational institutions of the Federal fire service of EMERCOM of Russia. To prepare specialists, the discipline program «Fundamentals of Radiation Safety and Protection» was developed from two sections - 4 hours theory, 8 hours practical lessons, and recommendations for testing knowledge control. Recommendations for conducting classes and a list of necessary literature and legislative and regulatory documents are given.
