The article focuses on modern conceptual research related to the category «service». Law enforcement problems of control of relations on rendering services initiated the process of systematization legislation in Russia. Deals with the definition and position of the «service» as a category, essence of relations on rendering services in the system of law on the basis of the acting (modern) legislation. Definition of the «service» as a category has to include basic and variable parts. The author offers new definition of the basic part of the «service» as a category for all branches of law. The author proposes a new definition of the basic part of the definition of the category of «service» (in a General legal sense) as a set of useful expensive actions (activities) of the contractor (the service provider, the service provider) designed to meet the needs of a customer (the customer, the service recipient), the result of which is intangible and inseparable from the process of such activities, does not have the property of preservation, which are within the scope arise by consent of the parties of legal relations mediated contractual design.
