The article is devoted to the matter of cooperation between the investigator and forensic units. The cooperation can be recognized productive in case the result received during it is positive, and the purpose for the sake of which cooperation was implemented, is reached, i.e. a certain volume of information which is necessary for disclosure and investigation of crimes is built. In the article a comparative analysis of such terms as “cognition” and “knowledge” is carried out from which it follows that unlike the term “knowledge” the term “cognition” includes both theoretical knowledge, practical skills and abilities, but in terms of contents it is broader and more meaningful. Investigator’s professional knowledge is of a great importance during the process of crime detection and investigation. However, this knowledge might not be enough to establish the issue. Therefore, there is a need to involve into investigation persons who have special knowledge and such knowledge is a part of their professional skills. Such persons are professionals and experts. While performing the task of the investigator an expert chooses the methods of investigation independently. An expert can make statements required for entering in the minutes. The conclusion of an expert can be weighty for the court to draw the inferences about the circumstances of the criminal case only in aggregate with the other evidences received in the process of the criminal investigation by the investigator. Despite the fact that investigative and forensic units have different competences and jurisdiction, methods and tools, technical support, by interacting, they solve one common problem - the fight against crime.
