Abstract and keywords
Abstract (English):
In this article the critical work of an outstanding figure of Russian Academy of sciences, art historian J. Staehlin is studied. Particularly, his work “A word on art of dance and ballet in Russia” (year 1769) is considered to be one of the first texts in the critical genre dedicated to the ballet theatre. The historical and theoretical analysis allows to detect the peculiarities in Staehlin’s perception of the dance as well as his observations on the first performances. The study allows to conclude that the thorough knowledge of the author of the “Word…” in the sphere of the musical theatre has enabled him to evaluate professionally the performance of the dancers hired to the Imperial court.
