The article examines the concept of lying from the standpoint of researchers in various fields of science. This interest of scientists is due to the need for a comprehensive understanding of the essence of the phenomenon of lies for its effective diagnosis. Despite numerous approaches to the study of this phenomenon, in our opinion, its formulation, types, signs, internal and external evaluation criteria require special attention for a better diagnosis when conducting a special psychophysiological study using a polygraph as part of the selection of candidates for service in the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation.
